Description
I love all birds of prey but Owls are particularly dear to me. This little one caught my eye and I had to paint her!
A lot of people have asked what does "virtual canvas" mean?
Virtual canvas means the piece is painted start to finish on the computer using an art program, in this case Corel Painter 11. For "Hoot" I took several reference photos of this little owl using the sport setting on my camera. I used those for color reference, expression etc--as traditional artists often do--but I painted on a blank virtual "canvas" on my PC with a wacom tablet and pen tool.
Its a little different from photo manipulation which starts with a photo and ends up with a manipulation of that photo. With a virtual canvas, the artist uses the photo as reference only, and paints what they see.

Thank your for the nice detailed description of your process; that actually made me appreciate what you did here a lot more. Now I want to look into trying that for myself. Very nice. V
